The Challenge
As part of her studies, Simran examined the staff journey and realised there was a significant lack of recognition for the impact staff made at work. This was affecting morale and well-being, leading to increased workforce issues and low retention rates.
She noted a general lack of appreciation across all staff groups. In addition, rest areas were of poor quality with limited access to healthy, nutritious food during shifts.
56.5%
of respondents reported they had come to work despite not feeling well enough to perform their duties
(NHS Staff survey: Health and Wellbeing, 2022)
The Innovation
Simran developed the concept of a ‘Reset Room’ to improve staff rest areas, presenting her findings in a process book. Her research led to the integration of colour therapy and nature elements in corridors and rest areas to enhance the staff experience while being mindful of infection control.
Additionally, she explored rest and play for staff, implementing a play wall and kindness cards posted on an appreciation wall to nurture colleague support.

The Impact
- Patients: Happier staff impacts more positively on patient care
- Practitioner: Staff feel more appreciated and staff morale has improved
- System: Improved staff recruitment and retention
