Sarah Rogers
Strategic Lead Nurse
One Gloucestershire
The Challenge
Sarah noticed an increasing lack of students applying to work in primary care. There was a shortage of placements offered/available due to the unavailability of space at surgeries, the lack of time to support students and an increase in number of roles at surgeries.
In 2024, 106 students were offered Primary Care placements because of Nurse on Tour.
The Innovation
Sarah started with the question “What could student nurses do to gain experience that would help?” and designed a population health prevention approach to support General Practice.
The NHS infobus, parked in car park at surgeries, offering health checks with five student nurses and created a RAG rating for patients and targeted the core 20+5 locations.
This service increased appointment accessibility, improved patient outcomes, and offered more student placements. Her plan aimed to enhance learning experiences, match students with suitable placements, and provide targeted solutions for overstretched services, fostering a sustainable Primary Care Workforce.
The Impact
- 100% of students enjoyed the day
- 79% of students were interested in a career in Primary Care after Nurse on Tour
- 26 sites were visited in 2024
