We welcome today’s DHSC announcement that there will be additional ARRs funding which can be spent by PCNs on employing Newly Qualified GPs (NQGP).

This is a prompt, if short term, response which addresses concerns about potential NQGP unemployment and will enable PCNs to have more discretion to shape their workforce according to need. It is a positive step in the right direction towards supporting primary care to move towards thought through workforce planning based on the population health needs of their own patients and communities. It appears to demonstrate that the new government understands the need to move towards NAPCs long held view that the primary care workforce needs to reflect the skills needed to accurately address local need.

Rediscovering the joy of working in primary care through the satisfaction of being empowered to deliver person centred outcomes is key to helping retain staff as they experience greater purpose and reward in their roles.
