Nyamka Marsh
Islington Lead Nurse
The Challenge
In her role as Primary Care Lead Nurse, Nyamka recognised that significant workforce recruitment and retention pressures across the Borough were impacting on primary care.
Nyamka was recognised for the Nurse Hub as runner up in the NCL Valued Awards for “training new nurses in GP and supporting the development of the current workforce”.
The Innovation
Nyamka created a Nurse Hub, with nurse clinics set up across the Borough to pool clinic time and expertise. Nyamka started small by employing four trainees a year in January 2020 and this has grown to 10 trainees over 5 cohorts in 2024.
This led to an increase in nursing appointments for patients while also increasing the training capacity for nursing teams in GP practices. The aim is to replicate the success of this work with other Allied Health Professional staff in the PCN.

The Impact
- Patient: Improved access to nurse appointments in Primary Care.
- Practitioner: Achieved her aims of boosting nursing recruitment and training opportunities.
- System: Training and upskilling of existing PCN nursing workforce, along with improved recruitment and retention and greater collaboration with local Borough Council and social care.
