Carers UK have cited the top three challenges for unpaid carers as:
- 66% lack of time away from caring
- 71% managing stress and responsibility
- 70% negative impacts on their physical and mental health
There are 5.7 million unpaid carers in the UK and every day an average of 12,000 people take on a caring role.
The Innovations
CARE has supported 12 projects aimed at:
- Health Creation: 83% the projects focused on supporting carers’ health and wellbeing.
- Connecting Providers: 58% of the projects focused on integrating carers with local services.
- Patient Activation: Digital technology and tools were used to connect carers for mutual support.

of CARE projects are likely to improve the health and wellbeing for carers and encourage mutual support.
The Impact
- Claire’s Unknown Carers: Carers now have first-time access to a range of support services which previously were unknown to them.
- Phillippa’s Young Carers: A proactive approach to identifying young carers to enable them access to support.
- Rachels Digital Carer Network: This helps carers to connect with and support each other through digital platforms.
