The Challenge

Kath was aware that cancer screening rates in Rumworth PCN were among the lowest in Bolton and Greater Manchester, in particular amongst BAME groups.

Feedback from patients suggested a need for more flexible appointment times with patients being seen in an accessible, comfortable or culturally appropriate setting. Patients reported they were  embarrassed and concerned about the procedure and its outcomes.

The Innovation

Kath collaborated with Health Watch to develop a walk-in community-based approach, giving patients time to talk through the procedure with trusted nurses from outside their own communities.

The key aims was to work closely with women from BAME communities to increase their understanding of cervical cancer screening, while also educating men about the importance of attendance.

The availability of female health practitioners was crucial, as was the need to treat patients with dignity and kindness.

The Impact

  • Patients: Improved confidence and understanding of the importance of cancer screening, with improved access for all
  • System: 3% increase in uptake in Bolton over the National screening average
  • Practitioner: Increased opportunity to make a difference to patients and families within her area
